To make a horse feel safe, we must be emotionally congruent. If we outwardly pretend to be one thing while inwardly feeling different, we project a predatory energy that they perceive. This will drive them away. If we are emotionally honest, the horse will sense this energy and connect with us.
We learn from all these responses. We learn to be our authentic selves. We learn to be present. We learn that we can make mistakes without judgment. We find a place of peace and joy, a place we can return to even when we leave the magical world of the horse.
WHAT WE DO
We immerse ourselves in nature and let the horses decide what to do. We maintain mindfulness and presence with them, remaining acutely aware of our thoughts. We observe the horses’ reactions. They might lick, chew, yawn, walk away, or even just stand with us as we navigate our emotions. We can choose to talk or stay silent; the horses will understand regardless. Each of their reactions teaches us something. Are we present? Are we emotionally honest? Are we working through difficult emotions? This process makes us aware of our issues in a way we’ve never experienced before. With awareness comes the opportunity to heal, to clear patterns and emotions in our lives that no longer serve us.
Our clients enjoy interacting with the horses. Brushing them is a beloved activity. The rhythm, peace, and mindfulness it fosters is a memorable experience that many clients can recall in their everyday lives. This interaction with horses facilitates emotional regulation that individuals can tap into when they are away from our facility.
Leading a horse is a way to bond with them. Horses appreciate a leader who is kind, assertive, and clear in their direction. If we lead them mindfully, aware of their experiences, they will willingly cooperate. The leader must be aware of their breath, body language, and focus to establish a successful partnership. Horses may follow if you forcibly lead them, but the magic of connection won’t occur. These activities and others have numerous implications for our personal lives and relationships.
